ArtPrize 2026 in Grand Rapids: Your Guide to One of West Michigan’s Biggest Events

Every fall, downtown Grand Rapids transforms into something completely different.

Restaurants, hotels, museums, storefronts, parks, sidewalks and unexpected spaces throughout the city become galleries as ArtPrize returns to Grand Rapids. Whether you're a longtime West Michigan resident, new to the area, or visiting Grand Rapids for the first time, it's one of those events that really shows off what makes our city special.

And ArtPrize 2026 is officially underway.

When is ArtPrize 2026?

ArtPrize 2026 runs September 18 through October 3, with Preview Week taking place September 12–17.

Preview Week gives locals and early visitors an opportunity to get a first look at participating entries before the official competition begins.

The best part? ArtPrize is free and open to the public.

You don't need to be an art expert—or even consider yourself an art person—to enjoy it. Grab a coffee, walk downtown and see what catches your attention.

What Exactly is ArtPrize?

ArtPrize is an international art competition and cultural event held annually right here in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Rather than keeping the artwork inside one museum or gallery, ArtPrize essentially turns the city itself into a gallery.

Artists from around the world display paintings, sculptures, installations, photography, interactive exhibits, performances and other creative works throughout Grand Rapids.

You'll find entries in traditional art spaces such as the Grand Rapids Art Museum and Kendall College of Art and Design, but that's only the beginning.

Art can also be found inside restaurants, hotels and local businesses—and outdoors in parks and public spaces.

In 2026, participating locations stretch well beyond the immediate downtown core into areas including Bridge Street, Wealthy Street and other Grand Rapids neighborhoods.

What's New for ArtPrize 2026?

This year's event includes an expanded Preview Week along with themed weekends highlighting different forms of art.

The celebration begins with dance programming during Preview Week, followed by a music-focused opening weekend September 18–19.

ArtPrize's official kickoff includes a musical parade beginning at Rosa Parks Circle and ending at the Pearl Street Bridge, where the Earth Harp—described as the world's longest stringed instrument—will be featured in a performance.

The following day, Opera Grand Rapids is scheduled to perform at Rosa Parks Circle.

Families can also look forward to Doodle Street on September 26 at the Grand Rapids Downtown Market, an interactive experience designed to give younger visitors an opportunity to get creative.

Throughout ArtPrize you'll also find artist talks, demonstrations, interactive exhibits, performances and special events happening around the city.

Where Should You Start?

One of the best things about ArtPrize is that there really isn't a "right" way to experience it.

You can plan an entire day around seeing specific pieces, or simply head downtown and start walking.

Some popular areas and venues to include on your route are:

Make a Day of It

ArtPrize is also a great excuse to explore downtown Grand Rapids.

Instead of trying to see everything at once, pick an area and make an afternoon or evening out of it.

Walk through a handful of venues, stop somewhere local for lunch or dinner, grab a coffee or drink, and then keep exploring.

If you're bringing kids, turn it into a scavenger hunt and have everyone choose their favorite piece. If you're heading downtown for date night, combine ArtPrize with dinner and an evening walk along the Grand River.

And don't feel like you have to see everything.

With artwork and events spread across so many locations, ArtPrize is much better experienced over several visits.

Don't Forget to Vote

ArtPrize isn't just an exhibition—it's a competition.

Visitors have the opportunity to participate in public voting, helping determine some of the artists who will take home awards.

For 2026, ArtPrize is awarding $600,000 in grants and prizes, including awards selected through both public voting and juried competitions.

Public voting closes October 2, so if you find a piece you love, make sure you cast your vote.

ArtPrize Awards Celebration

ArtPrize concludes with its Awards Celebration and Fashion Show at the new Acrisure Amphitheater, giving Grand Rapids another opportunity to showcase one of the city's newest major attractions.

It's a fitting conclusion to an event that brings together art, architecture, businesses, neighborhoods and thousands of people throughout the city.
