As the leaves start to turn and the temperatures dip, fall in Michigan brings its fair share of beauty — and a reminder that winter isn’t far behind. Before the first snow flies, taking a few proactive steps around your home can make a big difference in comfort, safety, and long-term savings. Here’s a quick checklist to help you get ready.

1. Inspect and Clean Your Gutters

Falling leaves and pine needles may look picturesque, but they can clog gutters quickly. A blocked gutter can cause ice dams and roof leaks once freezing temps hit. Clear debris now, and check that downspouts are directing water at least 5–10 feet away from your foundation.

2. Check Your Roof and Chimney

Take a few minutes to visually inspect your roof (or have a professional do it). Look for missing shingles, damaged flashing, or areas that might allow leaks. If you have a fireplace, have the chimney swept and inspected — creosote buildup is a leading cause of chimney fires.

3. Service Your Furnace or Boiler

Before it’s running full-time, schedule a furnace tune-up or filter replacement. Regular service can extend the life of your system, lower energy bills, and help avoid a mid-January emergency. If you haven’t changed your air filters recently, add that to the list.

4. Seal Gaps and Windows

Cold drafts can sneak in through tiny gaps around windows and doors. Apply fresh weather-stripping or caulk where needed, and check that your storm windows and doors are installed properly. A little prep now goes a long way toward a warmer, more efficient home.

5. Prep Your Lawn and Landscaping

Give your lawn one last mow, trim back shrubs, and aerate or fertilize if needed. Drain and store hoses, shut off exterior faucets, and make sure your sprinkler system is winterized to avoid burst pipes later.

6. Clean and Store Outdoor Furniture

Once temperatures drop, clean your patio furniture and store it in a dry place if possible. Cover what stays outside to protect it from snow and ice — your future self will thank you come spring.

7. Test Safety Devices

Check the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms. With homes sealed tighter in the winter months, it’s especially important to make sure these devices are working properly.

8. Stock Up for Winter

Don’t wait for the first big storm to realize you’re out of essentials. Stock up on driveway salt, snow shovels, and furnace filters now. If you use a generator, test it and make sure you have fresh fuel on hand.

9. Inspect Insulation in Key Areas

Peek into your attic, crawlspace, or basement — heat loss in these areas can add up quickly. Adding insulation or sealing air leaks will help reduce your heating costs all season long.

10. Enjoy the Season!

Fall in Michigan is one of the best times of year. Take a drive to see the colors, visit a local orchard, and enjoy the crisp air — then rest easy knowing your home is ready for whatever winter brings.
